Lucy Kent X FARLY

Celebrating the Work of Lucy Kent: A Contemporary British Landscape Painter

This week on FARLY, we’re thrilled to spotlight Lucy Kent, a contemporary British landscape artist from North Wiltshire. Lucy draws inspiration from the natural world, particularly the magic of expansive horizons, dramatic skies, and the ever-changing seasons. Lucy’s paintings are a direct response to her surroundings, capturing the dynamic interplay of light, colour, and the expansive relationship between high skies and wide landscapes. “I love painting the same view at different times of day, noticing how the light transforms everything,” she says. Working directly from life, Lucy combines a knife and brush strokes, creating work that is both energetic and immersive.

Lucy’s passion for art began at a young age. Although initially trained in portraiture, she felt a stronger connection to the landscape. After moving from the city back to her countryside roots, she taught herself to paint the scenery around her. Her process reflects a deep connection to the natural world. She paints en plein air (from life), creating small studies outdoors that capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. 'The feeling I get from standing in nature and painting directly from life is so much more invigorating than portrait work,' she explains. Back in her studio, she reimagines these studies on a larger scale, layering oil paints with brushes and knives to build thick, rich impasto textures.

Through this practice, she has honed her ability to observe subtle changes in her environment—the shifting colours of the sky, the dance of light on water, and the way a breeze transforms a scene. We discussed how painting is not just a creative expression for Lucy, but also a profound exercise in mindfulness, teaching her to be fully present in the moment and truly observe the details of the natural world.

Her style is deeply influenced by colour, drawing inspiration from the Scottish Colourists and the Impressionists. Additionally, Lucy has been inspired by more contemporary artists such as Wolf Kahn, Milton Avery, and Andrew Gifford. 'Andrew Gifford’s encouragement to paint from life really gave me confidence,' she recalls. Their shared passion for capturing the beauty of changing light has shaped Lucy’s approach to her own work.

When asked to describe her work in three words, Lucy chooses “vibrant, textural, and joyful.” Her paintings radiate an energy that feels both timeless and personal, inviting us to pause and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the natural world.

The FARLY edit
For the FARLY collection, Lucy has curated a series of eight pieces inspired by the theme of Autumn. “As we transition into autumn, I wanted to reflect the beauty of this time of year—the shifting light, the warmth of the colours, and the way the landscape feels alive with change,” she explains. The collection features works that showcase her signature use of vibrant hues and layered textures, celebrating the interplay of nature’s elements.

Lucy loves to travel to places like Italy, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and especially Marrakesh, all of which inspire her vibrant work. Her paintings are more than just depictions of landscapes; they’re atmospheric impressions that capture the essence of a place. “I try to convey the atmosphere rather than what’s literally there,” Lucy explains. Whether it’s the dramatic shadows of a stormy sky or the twinkling lights of Marrakesh at night, her work invites viewers to feel the energy and emotion of the scene.

Lucy has always passionately believed that art can raise awareness and funds for charity. She founded Art for Charity Collective (ACC), which sold artworks to support various causes. Committed to making a difference, Lucy continues to back initiatives that have a meaningful impact.
