Honouring the Harvest – A Time of Gathering, Grounding, and Giving Thanks

This week’s spotlight is on Notting Hill shopkeeper Katrina Phillips, whose FARLY edit beautifully embodies the themes of Harvest—gathering, grounding, and giving thanks. As October draws near, bringing the Harvest season with it, we embrace a time of reflection, gratitude, and preparation for the winter months ahead.

Her curated collection helps us transition into the darker days of winter, carrying the light and abundance of the season with us, while honouring its cycles.

Katrina, a storyteller and curator of meaningful objects, grew up on the Scottish beaches of Argyle. Her deep connection to nature and storytelling has shaped her journey. She fondly recalls sitting around campfires, listening to stories passed down through generations—one of the most ancient forms of human connection. For Katrina, storytelling is not just a pastime; it is integral to her shop on Portobello Road, where every object holds a narrative.

Katrina’s shop, a family-run establishment since 1963, is a treasure trove of unusual and inspiring objects. Each item, from the affordable to the aspirational, is carefully sourced with intuition, craftsmanship, and history in mind. Whether it’s a rare antique or a newly crafted piece, every object tells a story, connecting the past with the present.

Her process is instinctive—whether she’s travelling or collaborating with a maker, something about the texture or story of the object resonates with her. The colours Katrina gravitates towards—earthy tones of rocks, seaweed, and the natural world—are inspired by the Scottish coastline of her childhood. Texture, more than colour, is what draws her in; she prefers objects that feel as though they are part of nature itself.

This spotlight, Katrina has chosen pieces that embody the themes of gathering, grounding, and transition. These objects, steeped in history and meaning, serve as reminders of the beauty of nature and the importance of honouring the earth’s cycles.

Lobi Tribe Terracotta Pot
A true highlight of this collection, the Lobi Tribe Terracotta Pot from Burkina Faso is a rare and magnificent find. Traditionally used for storing the fruits of the harvest, this pot features a unique spiked design that helps dissipate heat from its contents, such as wine or grain. Handmade by the Lobi tribe, these pots are now increasingly difficult to find, as many have been lost or damaged over the years. Its earthy texture and functional design make it not only a stunning decorative piece but also a symbol of the ancient practice of gathering and preserving the harvest.

Sacred Volcanic Incense Burner

Another standout piece is the Sacred Volcanic Incense Burner, crafted from Batu Candi, a sacred volcanic stone used to build the ancient temple of Borobudur. This object bridges the ancient with the modern, designed to sit comfortably in contemporary spaces while evoking a sense of sacred ritual. Katrina shares a personal ritual tied to this piece: at the full moon, she uses it for her own practice of giving thanks, filling the burner with Palo Santo to clear energy and set new intentions. The raw texture of the stone is a testament to nature’s power, grounding your space with its presence.
